Jasta 18 - Other Triplane-Jastas

Jasta 18

Jagdstaffel 18 (Fighter squadron) was formed on 30 October 1916 in accordance with order of the Kogenluft (Kommandierender general of aviation) NR. 54427 by FEA 12 (flier replacement department), and was mobile from this time.
The Commanding Officer was Oberleutenant Karl von Grieffenhagen, from Jasta 1. The first flight over the Front came on 8 January 1917, and the first victory on 23 January by Leutenant Walter von Bülow-Bothkamp, his sixth. He was also the first pilot to obtain five victories with Jasta 18. Leutenant Josef Flink, flying Albatros DIII 1942/16 was the first combat casualty when he was wounded during combat with FE2bs over Neuve Eglise, on 5 April. Oberleutenant von Grieffenhagen was promoted to Rittmeister on 18 April, and transferred to Kampfeinsitzer-Schule, Paderborn on 12 August. Oberleutenant Rudolf Bertold (12 victories), from Jasta 14, assumed command until he was severely wounded on 10 October, after having raised his score to 27. Oberleutenant Ernst Turck (one victory) took over the unit on 13 October. Turk was transferred to Jasta 15 on 20 March 1918. Leutenant August Raben (two victories), from Jasta 15, assumed command of Jasta 18 until the end of the war. The Jasta moved to the 17 Amree Front on 20 March until 8 April when it was moved on to the 6 Armee Sector. On 14 June the unit was stationed in the 19 Armee Sector where it remained for the rest of the war. Jasta 18 was given credit for the destruction of 107 enemy aircraft and five balloons while losing eight pilots killed, eleven wounded and one taken prisoner.

For some triplanes the military and/or factory number are not known. In these cases the identification number is specified by me such as par example (x11-3). This means, Jasta (fighter squadron) nr. 11 - nr 3.
